DEPARTMENT
The San Mateo County Parks Department provides a wide array of
services to ensure that visitors who come to County parks to picnic,
camp, hike, bike, play, and ride horses have a welcoming, safe, and
enjoyable experience. The operation and maintenance of 24 parks and
recreation areas, including over 16,000 acres of parkland and 190 miles
of trail, requires significant resources to manage. In recent years, the
Department has placed a greater focus on maintaining and upgrading
County parks and facilities, including developing a 5-year Capital
Improvement Program that addresses high-priority deferred
maintenance throughout the park systems, preparing a Wildfire Fuel
Management Program to mitigate the threat of wildfire, and replacing
aging amenities and adding new facilities based on the needs of the
public. The Department is also focused on increasing the diversity of
visitors. The Department’s Interpretive Program is developing a strategic
plan that will ensure programs being offered reflect the values and needs
of the public. To ensure the authenticity of the plan, the Department has
conducted a detailed public engagement process to solicit feedback from
all traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.
The San Mateo County Parks Department has 77 full time employees,
and is organized into five divisions: Operations and Maintenance,
Natural Resource Management, Visitor Services, Fiscal and
Administration, and Coyote Point Marina. The Department currently has
a two-year, $88.6 million budget.
